There's a handle at the pivot point on my kick-up rudder....
I'm assuming it's a locking device of some sort, can someone elaborate, and where can I download a manual for my '75 catalina 22....

That handle is more of a friction device as opposed to a lock. I tighten mine just enough to hold the rudder in the down position while sailing but allow the rudder to move up if it strikes an object. Someone around here will know where your manual resides and steer you in the right direction.

When I had mine, the friction lock handle didn't work, so to keep the rudder in the down position, we just used a 1/4-20 NYLON bolt with wing nut. Worked great, and in case of impact, it would shear easy. We always kept a few spares on board, but never needed them.

Actually I just want to be able to lock the rudder up when I'm recovering the boat out of the water, the line/clam cleat combo let go last time and I had to scramble to keep from damaging the rudder from dragging....
