Moorings/marinas in KW
As far as I know, there aren't any moorings (i.e, mooring balls) in the harbors around Key West. There are several marinas on the northern side of the island, but dock space at these marinas is expensive. (Phone Numbers and details to follow.) There are many boats anchored west of Fleming Key (adjacent to KW), and south of Sunset Key (part of KW Harbor), and I don't think that anyone has to 'approve' an anchorage spot. The major disadvantage to this area is that there is a lot of commercial traffic through here (fishing boats, dive boats, parasailing boats, USCG boats, glass bottom boats, etc...). Another minor hassle is that, theoretically, you need to move your boat every three days (I've never seen this enforced). Also, be warned that the tidal currents in this area are pretty strong, the bottom is largely crushed coral and 'marl', and that local waters get shallow once you get outside the established channels. If you want to try this, two anchors and a strong motor on the dinghy are recommended! Here are a few phone numbers you might try for more info:KW Chamber of Commerce: (305)294-2587 or (800) LAST-KEYMarinas: Dockage fees tend to drop as you get further away from Duval Street (the "main drag").
