Yes, same with mine. Our marina has a great electrician . I had him cut out the bird's nest and redo it for $200. Money well spent. I once tried doing something like this and ended up with the same mess.

I just replaced the push/pull ignition switch on mine. Glad I took the time to go through the mess of wiring during the overhaul. A few terminal blocks can ease the torment. I feel your pain Denise.

If it is a Universal engine you might try taking a look at Maine Sail's write up on rewiring the harness. It has some good photos of the back of the instrument panel with the key switch and related wiring.

Yup He's already scolded me on the mess. As I have a 2 cylinder and all my cables are quite short I've not made the rewire a priorty. Shocking photos showing PO's work and lord knows what. But the key switch change out was pretty easy.

old on lower left. scary mess isn't it?

Here's the new one in place.

and the new one hanging on

It really wasn't hard to do but the sweltering heat and churned up river at my clubs dock makes it 300 times more difficult.

That's an uncomfortably familiar nest of wires. With so little instrumentation it's amazing there are so many connections.

I agree completely. I found the panel with no power just after launching last fall. I quickly hot wired the thing jumping a hot lead to the fuel pump, running a lead to the glow plugs and finally one to the starter solenoid. Three wires is all it takes yet I had the same birds nest.

I should tackle the task sooner rather then later.... Maybe even build my own panel with better gauges as Maine sail suggest. even my fuel guage doesn't work on the new tank and sender even though it did when we changed the fuel system out.
