Does anyone know anything at all about the Key Lime Sailing Club located in Key Largo Fla? If not can some of your Fla locals tell me what the sailing would be like in that area for the first of April. I found them on a web site , it looks like a family type business that rents small cottages with a dock and Catalina sail boat, thanks . Mike

Key Lime

I'm a long time customer at the Key Lime sailing club. It's a great little place on the bay side of Key Largo. Nice cottages and a great sunset. they've got quite a little fleet of Cat 22, Oday 22 and Morgan 22 etc. for the guests to use. We did not make it down this past winter but were also considering a late April early May trip. We mostly end up day sailing out in the bay for a couple of hours and then back to the docks. All of our visits have been in January and the weather is very IFFY then. I will warn you that the web site prices are quite out of date.

If the weather is iffy in Jan , what is it like during the first week of April? Can you tell me if the cottages are clean and well kept?? Thanks for the time , Mike

Recent Visit to Key Lime

My wife and I stayed at the Key Lime Club this past Jan. We had nice weather (75 or so) and yes there are great sunsets. The place is far from 'fancy' but the cabin was clean and functional and the folks that run the place were very friendly. The boats are not new but they worked for us. We sailed a Catilina 22 and enjoyed a long daysail on the Gulf side. It satisfied my January sailing desire. If you are looking for a 4 star fancy shmancey place then go somewhere else, but if you want a sort of 'funky' friendly laid back Keys experience for a reasonable price then check it out. They only take check or cash so leave your plastic for other items. There is a nearby resturant called the "Fish House" that was fantastic if you like seafood. Bill

Thanks for all the responses , It sounds like it is pretty much as advertised . It did not look fancy which is why I choose it . The prices seemed real reasonable and just wanted some feedback from people who had been there , thanks for your time , Mike

Florida sailing in April

IMHO, March and April are probably THE best months for sailing in Florida. The weather is great (and stable) and the winds are usually steady but moderate (usually 8 to 12 kt). The odd cold front still comes through but since it's already cool here the effects are not as drastic as in the fall, when things are warmer. Expect cool nights (50's) and warm days (70's). Have a blast! Peter H23 "Raven"

It tears my heart to recommend KLSC to anyone.....

But the truth is indeed that it is a great place to relax and sail in a totally nonpretentious environment. Nelleke and I just happened to stumble into KLSC last November and spent a delightful 5 days there, sailing a 23 ft O'Day. For us this was an excellent way of softening the culture shock from being transplanted back into the USA after 4 months of sailing the remote islands of Vanuatu for Project MARC (see link). Think of KLSC as a Steinbeckian/Hemingwayesque throwback to the fifties with totally laidback management and an ever varying cast of gregarious old sailors and their gals. If KLSC ever decides to become a water's edge retirement home for sailors, Nelleke and I would reserve our spot right away. The sad reality is, of course, too many people are going to "discover" KLSC, the bay-shore will become lined with condos and we will be forced to retire on Sakao island in the Maskelyne group of the Vanuatu archipelago (see image). Oh well, no good deed goes unpunished. ;) Flying Dutchman PS The ugly bright Tinker sail and fiberglass hulls spoiling the traditional dugout sailing canoe scene in the picture belong to "Flying Angel II" (still under construction), our clinic's new catamaran for transporting patients. In it's final form we will attempt to make Flying Angel II blend in better.
