Folks, I just heard of hull number three being free and is scheduled to be destroyed this week. She's a sistership to the Lady J, who's restoration I've been chronicling up here. she needs ribs replaced or repaired and some planking done. It'd be a shame to let her die.... Here are some pics.

If we could get her up here, I've got a place for her.

One time years ago I said to my mother in law that I wished I could afford an elephant. She wanted to know why I wanted an elephant!!! I said I didn't want an elephant I just wished I could afford one.
I wish I could afford this boat and I would love to have it and the time to enjoy it.

Well, I hope someone steps up to the plate here. She looks pretty good over all. These were not slow boats either. Altho she rates 156 SoCal PHRF vs 108 for mine or a Catalina 42, the truth is, she can hang pretty good with us given a good complement of sails. I have a soft spot for them being from SoCal and having had a YC member who restored one beautifully. Thanks for caring.

Ok, she was James Arness's boat originally and a custom one off build of a K-40. She was commissioned as "Seasmoke" and Marshall Dillon traded her for K-50 hull number one. These are photos of her from an ad a few years ago.

The Lady J's owner is likely to take her and ship her to my yard. We'll find a new benefactor or owner later.

Good lord ! She has a history and they were about to sent her to the chainsaws? I hope you get the opportunity to restore her.

Charlie, How tough is it to repair/replace the fractures frames? Seems like a massive job to tear apart the interior to get at the damaged areas? Or do you work from the outside after removing the hull planks? I know wood is a great material so whatever you rip apart can be rebuilt, seems like a pretty big undertaking however.

From what I understand, these are broken just like the ones on the Lady J. There's supposed to be six broken, which will likely turn into twenty. We did twenty eight on the Lady J. If you have to completely replace the ribs, it can be a challenge. Usually, you can scarph in new sections like we did for Lady J and that's not that bad. The hull work for Lady J, including reef and caulking every single seam ran about 26K. You can check my "Lady J" threads for more info.

Well, in for a penny, in for a pound. We took the boat. In a few weeks I'll introduce y'all to "Seasmoke".

At the very least you will make wages and you may very well turn a nice profit.

Good Job!

I hope someone puts a nice set of race sails or her and gets out on the course after she's restored. A winner of the Ensenada race ought to get out and stretch her legs once and a while! Rick D.

Awesome!
Maybe some of us could visit (At our expense) and even learn about boat restoration. This vessel saved from the chain saws is a great thing.
I'm stunned that this thread went from "Scheduled demolition" to "We'll take it" in no time.
