I'm sure I remember seeing cell phones being used around the Marina, by my Sprint service won't connect there. The only area that I've been successfull is wthin eye-sight of the dam. Anyone making cell phone calls from the marina?

Sometimes

We have Verizon, I get no service in the p-lot at the marina, sometimes no service in the slip and sometimes full service. Haven't figured out the proper body contortions to get full service all the time. Out in the lake I have had full service everytime I have checked, but the phone is usually down in the cabin somewheres. Of course I have a crappy phone so your mileage may vary. I asked in the office once and I think they told me everyone used Cellular One or something like that.

Used to work

I used to have AT&T and it worked all over the lake very well. Switched to Sprint for cost and it doesn't work at all.

Try Verizon

I have had good luck with Verizon. Usually can get digital signal at Steele Creek Marina and most areas around the lake.

The BEST signal

US Cellular is THE carrier to use at the lake. Don't trust just me, ask Don - Steele Crk Mgr. Problem is, most of us live in civilization and don't have US Cellular in our town. I almost activated a phone w/ them but fortunantely found out that even w/ their nationwide plan, you MUST use at least 1/2 of you package minutes in their local area or you will be terminated and w/ heavy termination fee! That kills the deal. We can all get a signal out on the water. At the dock is where we need the help! The best alternative I can think of for the "less than great" signals as everybody else is talking about, is to have an external antenea mounted on our boat. I'm trying to find out how to rig one up now, but I'm not getting much help from my cell phone manufacturer. I know it should be similar to a car mount system. Anyone have ideas?

Here's another way

Used to have this problem on the Pamlico. I got an old bag phone from ebay for a few bucks, they use 3 watts (I think) instead of a handhelds approx 1 watt. During the summer, or whenever, your carrier can switch the service from your handheld to the bag phone in a few minutes.
