Kenyon Mast Cracks?

I have an '83 H34 with a Kenyon Mast. My Rigger says there are small cracks in the mounts for the spreaders where they are welded to the mast. Has anyone had this problem and if so, did you have it repaired? My Rigger says to keep an eye on it to see if the cracks progress. There is also a doubler installed inside the mast around the spreader attach points, which strengthens the area. I bought this boat last October and would be interested what other owners have done about this problem, which I'm told is common to the Kenyon Mast. Thanks for your reply!

Cracks in Kenyon Mast

Joe, I had my mast off about 3 years ago, but didn't see any cracks. My wife and I stripped it ourselves and had it re-painted at Svendsens. (We are in Alameda too). I remember that the surface of the welds were not the greatest (the beads were kind of cracked looking). I ground them down some to get rid of the old paint and they appeared to penetrate into the mast extrusion. Also, the paint itself was cracked and there was surface corrosion around the bolts that attached the spreaders to the mast. Could that be mistaken for cracks in the aluminum? Do you have your mast off the boat? Are the cracks in the welds or in the extrusion itself. Svensens can probably tell you if it can be re-welded. Let me know if you need any more info or if possible I can come by and look at it too. Allan "Alchemie" '85 H34

Hi Allan, Thanks for your reply! I had a furler installed by Svendsen's and they told me about the cracks. The mast is still on the boat and they advised I go take a look at the cracks and inspect periodicly. I bought the boat last October, and the previous owner had the standing rigging replaced and installed a stainless compression post by Jack Scullion. So I'd rather not take the mast down unless it's a safety issue. I too have the cracking/pealing paint. I keep the boat at Grand Marina, slip B20. Stop on by if you're in the neighborhood.
