Kenyon Marine wind instruments

I have two gauges by Kenyon Marine on my boat: apparent wind indicator AW-300 and anemometer WS-300, most probably dating from the Seventies.

These two instruments are currently not working, since the two analog meters are not connected to any wind station at the masthead.

I am now considering a revamping of such system, to have it actually show wind direction and intensity instead of only showing its unquestionable beauty. Unfortunately, neither myself nor the previous owner of this boat have got an operating or installation manual of these two Kenyon tools. Kenyon Marine itself appears to have been out of operations for decades.

I was wondering whether someone can help me on this topic. It would be great if anyone had an installation manual for these instruments. Otherwise, it would also be very helpful if someone could advise me on which kind of wind station I should install on my masthead (what signal the wind station should transmit to the meter), so as to put the two Kenyon gauges back into operation.

Thank you very much for any input.

Modern wind instruments are typically digital and output their data using NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 protocols. Older pre NMEA 0183 instruments used an analog output. It will be difficult if not impossible to find replacement sensors. Airmar may still make them.

It may be time to retire the old Kenyons and install modern instruments.

This is the fastest, least expensive (especially if you include your time) method to get working gauges.

Now you could also get some old electronic test equipment and play around with various inputs into those old qauges until you fully understand how they respond. You may find during this testing that you destroy internal components so you may also have to rebuild these units. Then reverse engineer what the output of the sender units need to supply to get useful information and then build and test units until you figure out all the tweeks to get the level of accuracy you desire. Please don't ask me how well I know this method...

Or you could get lucky and find what you need at the link @dlochner gave you above.

Hello,

Give up on the Kenyon displays.

If you want wind information you need to buy something new. Raymarine, Simrad, Garmin, etc all make them. The cheapest system will be around $500 (before installation) and the most comprehensive and complex will be over $2000.

If you decide to move forward with this project, you should think about your entire instrument system. This may be the time to upgrade everything - plotter, instruments, VHF, etc. Even if you don't decide to do everything at least think about so that you can easily upgrade in the future.
