Hello, My new-to-me 1986 Newport 28 has Kenyon instruments for depth, speed / log, and wind speed. Only the depth works. The speed / log does not power up, and there is nothing on the mast for wind speed. I have done a google search for info on Kenyon, but all that I can find is info on stoves. Does anyone have a source for info on kenyon wind and speed / log instruments? Any source of parts? I don't want to spend a lot of money for new instruments, all I really need is depth, and that works. However, if I can get the speed / log to work that would be cool, and wind speed and angle would be nice to know too. Thanks, Barry Lenoble Noble Prize, 1986 Newport 28

I too...

...have the same assortment of Kenyon gauges (except wind-speed). I too spent some time on a web-search for any and all instrument info, only to get intimate with their stoves. I did find that there is a place in Florida that does some service on the instruments, but I didn't really pursue it because it didn't look as though I was going to have much luck, or at least fiscal luck, getting mine done. I don't know which gauges you have, but for speed and distance if you take the covers off the rears of the instruments you'll find they require a 9V battery. Other than that you might want to check the connections. Or, they could have some more involved needs. How's that for help......

All in the same boat

I have a Keyon depth finder on my boat. It came on the boat when I bought it and it has, what I believe is, a through hull transducer. (Not going to pick and pry at it, I like my boat above water if it is) To find articles on this I went to google, and searched the groups section for 'kenyon depth gauge.' It is still sketchy at that. My unit lights up but has no display readout. I would love to know what frequency the transducer operates at so that I can replace the depth gauge without the thru-hull. But so far I have given up and am planning to just get a Humminbird fish finder instead. It has all the same features, a bigger display, and is cheaper. Stephen Fierro Captain of Calamity

9V battery

Wow, I would never have expected a 9V battery inside the speed / log instrument. Next time I'm on the boat I'll try to take the cover off and see what I can find. Thanks, Barry

The cover...

...comes off by removing two small phillips-head screws, then pull straight back. This will reveal two (sort of) compartments, the bottom one has the wire connections, the top one is just the right size for a 9V battery. Hope this is your problem. AD

Its a...

...200 MHz transducer. Shouldn't be too hard to find another in-hull 200 that'll work. Where in Phila are you? I live and work here. AD

Ok. Next obvious question.

I did check the the transducer and it is thru-hull. Are there any other brands that run on the same frequency? I don't want to have to haul the boat out in the middle of the season for a depth gauge. Besides we don't have any services like that that I know of in Philadelphia. I am at the Philadelphia Marine Center near Dave and Busters.

... do you know whether Signet instruments use a 9V battery also? Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Look around for some in-hull...

...200 MHz transducers. Don't bother with another thru-hull. West Marine, Defender and the like or even EBay have them. At some later date you can just remove the thru-hull altogether and fill-in the hole with fiberglass.

The last word- give up the hunt

I have Kenyon wind-speed and wind direction (not working) plus assorted 1'+/1'- instrument, plus speed, plus distance. Four instruments in all. None work. I did find a place in Florida that does bench work but no parts. Opening price point to look was $60.00 plus time and parts. Forget them. The mast head transducer is a six wire affair. I have tried to mate to common transducers with no luck. I have just replaced the wind speed-wind direction with a Standard Horizon unit. My plan is to pull out the Kenyon when I feel in the mood to glass in four six inch holes. My wind direction did work but the cups on the sender are shot. I do have the manual on the whole bit. Good Luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

My Kenyon Speed

Hello, I finally got a chance to look at my non-functioning Kenyon speed / log instrument. I took off the screws that held it in the case, and gently pried it out. Know what I found? On the rear of the unit is a switch. It was in the OFF position. I turned it ON, and the gauge now powers on and displayed 0.0. I have no idea if it will work, but at least I know there is power. I wonder if the PO turned it off when he got a GPS and just left it off? Barry

Speedo test

If you can take your transponder out without sinking the boat have somebody flick the little paddle wheel over while you watch the read out. It should register speed if it's working.
