Kenyon Alcohol Stove Repair

The alcohol stove in my 81 H27 wasn't working so I decided to overhaul it. I've put in a new pump assembly and burner re-build kits. However, there is a filter that goes into the bottom of the burner assembly and I can't get the old ones out, and I think they may have been the major problem all along. Anyone ever deal with this, or have any ideas? I've got it on the bench and have done everything but "Drill it out" which I'm don't think would be a good idea. Based on dates in this forum I don't think too many people are checking this time of year, but I'll hold out hope for some good advice. Keith

I sent mine back

I have an '81 H30 probably has the same stove unit, although I wouldn't swear to it knowing Hunter as I do now. Same deal, coudn't get to that part. I called Kenyon marine and they told me to send it back for a guarented rebuild. They told me that it would cost about $80.00. That seemed reasonable so off it went. They fixed it alright- the total to ship it back was about $200.00. 80 bucks to fix and 120.00 to ship. I'm not satisified with the way the stove works. You must constantly watch it or it will go out. Flooding the galley with alcohol. If you have an alcohol stove that isn't working to your satisfaction, my recommendation would be, rather than spending money to fix it I would re-stove...

Not fair.

Dan: This may not be a fair judgement of the repair. You are 2500 miles offshore and there is NO UPS ground shipment. Your freight charges where probably UPS 2nd day or overnite shipment. The real issue here is weather the repair was actually done properly or not. The amount of freight for a ground shipment within the contential US would not have been nearly that high. My opinion is that ANYONE with a pressurized alchol stove should only consider a propane or Origo replacement.

Why do you say that Steve

I have a Kenyon stove and have had very few problems. I used to have a Origo in a previous boat and I do agree they are great but why replace if it works?

Because it did not work.

Stephen: My point was that it did not work and I do not think that these stoves are very safe. I had one in my original Hunter 25 and hated the damn thing with the flame ups etc. Of course all of this is in retrospect. Dan probably would not have had it repaired for $200 and would have put the few extra bucks into a new stove had he known. It is unfair to blame Kenyon (or whoever fixed it and blame them for the freight charges). Dan lives in HI. There is no ground transportation to Hawaii (this is where the high transportation charges come from). If the shipper only ships UPS, you are sort of screwed over there. The best way to transport to/from HI is USPS. They have the best service at a reasonable price (to/from HI).

We now know UPS to HI is expensive.HA

Thanks for the stove opinions. Yes, I would love propane but for the little it's used I can't justify the investment. I'll contact Kenyon. Thanks anyway.......Keith

Check "Gear Here".

There is an Origo 6000 in "Gear Here". I think that is a drop-in to replace the Kenyon. It is alcohol but unpressurized. I have the stovetop Origo 2000 and it works really well. The 6000 is three burners plus oven I think.

Gear Here?

Ed, Where is Gear Here? Is it on this website? I can't find it. THANKS for the help.
