Anyone have first hand experience/update on the dredging in Kent Narrows. We have a trip later this month and it would sure save a ton of time cutting thru Kent Narrows as oppose to cutting around on the outside. Last year we went thru with our old boat (4 ft Draft) and had all kinds of problems (ran aground twice). This year we have a 5 foot draft and so I'm even more concern. I recall reading that they wqere dredging it but hadn't heard an update on first hand experience. Before anyone reminds me, I know about the bridge and waiting for them to raise it on the half hour. Any updates/recent experience would be helpful.

I haven't been through Kent Narrows

since last year, but if I were going again, I'd call one or more of these marinas first and get their take on how thin the water is there these days. Good luck. Just spoke to a gal down the hall

Dredging is under way. She and her husband have a power boat and were there two weeks ago. Two dredgers were deepening and widening the channel on the Chester River side. She says no problem.... Jim S/V Java

I've never had a problem

carrying 4ft of draft through Knapps. I doubt you'd have any problem with a 5 ft draft. Just follow the navaids carefully, i.e., red-right-returning entering from either side and call the bridge tender for an opening once you enter the channel. Lotsa nice anchorages or little towns to visit once in the Choptank. Let me know if you'd like some suggestions.

Here's what I heard

This was emailed to me by a friend while I was in the Bahamas. I just got back yesterday so I cannot confirm but I thought I'd pass it along: Here's the word, dredging the north channel is to be completed before this holiday weekend, depending upon the Corp of Engineering inspection. Proposed depth is 7' MLW. Beware, the dredging pipe, aprox. 28" in diameter made of PVC, still extends across the bottom of the Chester River to Eastern Neck Island. This is where the previous boating accidents occurred..in the shallows off Eastern Neck Island. FYI...there is suppose to be a future plan where monies will be generated in support of every 3 year dredging operation plan. This word is from a dredging foreman at Piney Narrows Marina.

Kent Narrows Northern Channel Dredging

I keep my boat in the Kent Narrows and as of Memorial Day weekend the dredging of the Northern channel appeared to be nearly complete. There was 7+ feel at low tide throughout the channel. If you're heading east up the Chester River from Kent Narrows, just make sure you get into the deeper water before you make the turn to head east because the dredging pipe runs all the way to eastern neck island. It's very well marked though. You should not have any problem.

Latest status from local marinas

I just spoke with folks at Mears Pt Marina for Kent narrows and Tilghman Islnad Marina for knapps Narrow. According to Mears, the dredging is complete and well marked for Kent Narrows. MLT is now 7 ft in the channel. Knapps Narrows is still being dredged, but the main problem area has been fixed (left shoal at chesapeake side entrance). They said to keep to the right and no problem. Looks like I'll cut thru boath of this if I need to make up some time.
