Cape Cod - Sen. Edward Kennedy's schooner, The Mya, was freed from sand and shallow water off Cold Storage Beach early Monday morning. Beached yesterday, the Kennedy schooner Mya was pulled to safety today with little, if any apparent damage. According to Dennis police Capt. William Monahan, the boat ran aground Sunday afternoon in strong winds and rough seas. Karl Anderson and John Sheehan of Karl's Boat Shop in Harwich, told police they lost control of the vessel while trying to reach Sesuit Harbor. Sen. Kennedy made an early morning visit see his boat which ran aground yesterday in seven-foot waves and strong winds near Cold Storage Beach. bystanders said. The boat, usually moored in Hyannis Harbor, is left late in the water for a Thanksgiving weekend cruise, a tradition among the Kennedy family. Yesterday the two crew brought the schooner through the Cape Cod Canal to the Northside Marina in Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis where it is stored for the winter. The worry was that the battering waves would damage the wooden schooner, in the family for about 20 years. But this morning, there were only a few scrapes on the schooner's bottom and no apparent damage to the keel and hull.

Thanksgiving Cruise?

They must have been raised by polar bears! We had 4" of snow in Eastern MA two days before, and the day before T-Day had temps in the teens. The article that I read also had the crew jumping overboard "in the frigid waters" and making it to shore. --Ron

Tradition

Many a thanksgiving have gone by that I wished that my boat was still floating. You have to admit that this year was abnormal. Remember that last year we could have sailed into the new year. So this tradition would not be unthinkable

I went to Newport on Friday and as I crossed the bridge I saw a boat under sail while it was snowing. My wife asked if I would sail while it's snowing. With out missing a beat I said sure It would be great! understand I hate, hate, hate being cold. But I do love sailing.

Did you notice

The Kennedy spokeswoman was named Cutter, talking about a schooner. Just tickled my funny bone.

ever get the feeling...

that maybe ol' teddy ought to stay away from the water, altogether...

Karl, not Teddy

It seems every time I sail intyo Hyannis Harbor, Mya (Kennedy's lovely boat) was sailing around. Never out of the harbor. The Senator at the helm, and a large number of young people doing all the work. Ted was certainly not at the helm when Mya missed the Sesuit Harbor entrance and was beached close to my house. There were 35-50 knot winds out there, blowing from the West, acorss the narrow harbor entrance. Karl Anderson, a local boatyard owner and experienced racer was in charge. The big question is, why did Karl decide to bring the boat around the Cape on a day with weather like that? Yachter hubris, I suppose. Roger Shoemaker C27 &Mabel Cape Cod

Alert!

Tom, not just the water. Heard a rumor that they are going to issue an alert for the Northeast. Teddy is getting his drivers license back!

Hubris

The article also noted that neither the skipper or crewman had on a life jacket, yet they jumped into very cold water. Dumber than dumb!

RonD, true but......

"Anderson and Sheehan jumped out and walked about 150 feet to shore"

R

Rod Johnson,

I'd still wear one!

I was down in that area Saturday, not boating weather to me! Anyway, I'd wear a PFD no matter what this time of year in New England, Cape Cod Bay never really warms up, even in Summer. It is just basic common sense to wear a PFD in rough weather, warm or COLD. In this day and age of hydraulic trailers, I don't see why Karl's Boatshop didn't simply haul MYA out in Hyannis and bring her overland to Harwich where their shop is, rather than risk sailing her around to Sesuit Harbor (Dennis).

So how do you explain to Teddy ...

...that you're this world class sailor, sailing a terrific boat and manage to lose control and run aground on the beach? Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Would it...

...still be national news if it was anyone other than a Kennedy? ...be a chance of a lifetime to sail on it, even in rough weather?

Rod J:

Rod: I would have to agree with you. Maybe they had themm on and decided (because it was a low tide) that they did not need them (speculation only). As we all know, some people do not have the good sense that they where born with either.
