I am going to replace my standing rigging with Norseman fittings/new rope this winter. I've read several articles/posts that indicate turnbuckles needn't be replaced as part of the re-rigging process. I'm curious to know what mfr was used as OE on the S2 (1984 9.2A) and what material the turnbuckles are made from It would be great to find out I can just clean up and keep the turnbuckles and replace only the pins.

I'd appreciate any feedback from those who have replaced their rigging and what they did specifically about the turnbuckles.

My 11.0 came with a closed up design turnbuckle with the pins being basically a formed coil spring with end being formed such that stuck through the slot and into the hole of the swags fitting. When I replaced the stdg rigging, I also replaced the turnbuckles with an open design and a plain cotter pin as they were 32 yrs old and the open design allowed for better inspection. I think the S2 Angelfire letter states the OEM.

In almost every case, if the turnbuckles are the right type and size, neither the turnbuckle or the pins need replaced anyore often then the chainplates do...
Inspect them with a magnifying glass and if damage is seen, replace them.

Its the cable that has the most issues, and usually where they disappear into the swaged fitting... when swaged, they take a tremdous stress and over the years with the vibrations of the rigging working as it does, and water intrusion carrying god knows what kind of chemicals with it that has been picked up in the atmosphere, and any freeze/heat damage, that the integrity of the swage connection becomes unreliable after several years. And its impossible to inspect with any accuracy...

So replacing the cables is recommended....
And when using the norseman fittings, it greatly reduces the stresses that is pressed into the cable strands when a swage fitting is installed, so the cable can actually last longer and is easier to inspect with some degree of confidence.....

A. guy in mastup tried that a couple of years qago and the threads though the same were really a sloppy fit. He finally did not trust them and replaced the turn buckles as well.

I've never broken a turnbuckle housing but I have snap a pin.

Your furling drum attached to a turnbuckle WITHOUT toggles. That was an accident waiting to happen. It failing was inevitable.

Thanks for all the feedback and info! I think I will clean/inspect and replace the turnbuckles as necessary. Of course if I decide to replace 1, I'll likely just go ahead and replace them all.
