How high can you point with the winged keel?
How big an advantage is the normal keel compared to the winged keel?
I get my boat in 3 months, so maybe to late to change.
All advise welcome.
Thanks lads.
Ross.

I have the fin keel so I can't tell you the difference on pointing but the fin is usually better, but a lot depends on the waters you are sailing in. I'm in Seattle, WA and Puget Sound is nice and deep in most places so the fin works great, but if your waters are shallow then the wing is the only way to go. Our tidal range is up to 17' so at -4' tides even the 6' 3" draft can be a problem in some marinas and bays. I'm sure you will have good sailing no matter which keel you get. Catalinas are good boats.

Bob,

I have the wing keel and can point to 35 degrees off of true wind if the water is flat, but she does best at just under 40 degrees. We race against a C30 with a fin keel and he does point better but that's only when there is enough water to get out of the Harbour.

Ross,
I have a wing keel 30 and before purchase talked to some folks who'd sailed/raced both designs. The consensus seemed to be that condition of sails and the skill of the skipper meant more than which keel design you had. For cruising they felt it really didn't matter.

I have the wing for the shallow waters where I sail. As Bob said I think you'll be happy with her either way.

Best of luck with your new boat,
Jim
