I am a new Catalina 22 owner and have a question. Is it best to moore with keel up or down?

Where do you keep your boat? My boat is in the ocean. I have to keep mine up because of low tides. Actually the reason I can have my slip is because of this feature. Otherwise I would have to pay 2x as much for a slip. With the keel up you are putting the weight on the cable/winch and the pivot pin. With it down the weight is against the keel trunk and pivot pin. It probably wobbles back and forth more with it down. This wobble leads to more wear around the pivot pin. That's my 2 bits.

A swing keel boat like the 22 is best moored with the keel up when you're away from the boat for any length of time. Why? The boat rocks sideways and the motion is transmitted to the keel(which is hung on a large pin). This causes wear on the pin and the trunk. With the keel up, that wear is eliminated or minimized. Hey Ken, I'm not sure if this could happen on your boat but it has happened to others. If the cable breaks, the swing keel can drop with enough force to crack something. A way to prevent this is to install a keel bra. (see last paragraph on related link) Happy sails _/), MArk
