Keel

I have water in my keel. It has seeped in thru the side of the bilge.
It is rain water as "KABOO" #395 has been on the hard for over two years.
I have drilled holes under the bilge area to the bottom of the keel to
dry it out. Should I fill it with epoxy and filler(ie West
system)? Thanks for any help Al Adams

Hi.
I also get rain water in the bilge, but it doesn't seep in through the
sides.
I think it comes from the drain holes in the base of the cupboards under the
main saloon berths.
How it gets there I'm not sure, maybe from the aft lockers. Any one else
experienced this or know the cure.
Ray.

Hi Ray:
I get water into the bilge all the time- be it from the (fresh)
watertank overflow, or heavy
rain- the chance to get water into the bilge is normal- I think.
That's the reason I got
a pump there. One other source of water could be from the stuffing box-
that's easy to
check: use a flashlight (or if you have a good search light) and see if
any water drips
from the shaft where it comes out of the stuffing box. I just remember:
my icebox
runoff also drains into the bilge.

Hi All

Most of the water gets there from the cockpit or locker drains. Check the
seal around the cockpit sole as when it really rains the waters eeps in
quite a lot and can also get in around teh screws. I leave my Vega drain
plug out during the winetr so any water getting in draiins straight out.

Regards to all

Yea, I had water (dampness at least) under stb bunk. I think it was
coming thro badly sealed cockpit sole. Not so bad now as have
improved seal - still have several stripped threads on the bolts that
hold sole plate down.

Al: I think you mean water in the void under the bilge, right? I found a
very small screw below the bilge drain and near the bottom of the keel that I
removed when Calimera V1071 was on the hard for a couple of years. I also
removed the bilge drain. I always had water draining from the bilge drain
after a rain, but never a drop from the "keel screw" below. I never did
figure out why that was there, but after 30 years I don't have any osmosis or
other problems so concluded it didn't matter. When I haul out next spring
I'll see if there's any seepage. I don't have a clue whether epoxy fill
would be the "modern" way, but I think I'd leave well enough alone. Just my
two cents worth. Bill Bach V1071
