My Mac 25 is old and I have new cable on the winch. While I have the panels off would it be a good idea to replace the winch?, it is a 1980. The winch seems to be OK, but I am looking at preventive measures, especially while in dry dock. What type winch do I need, and where is the easiest place to order one. Can I use a tractor winch from a local dealer?, or should I order one from a marine supply? Thank you,

I put a new winch from Havencraft on my Mac25 a few years ago. Friction type. My winch seemed to be OK, but I just wanted to be sure.

I don't know if the Mac22 and the Mac25 winches are the same; I imagine they are. The exact replacement winch for the Mac22 is carried by Grainger industrial equipment, a catalog store with some outlets. By the way, Mikecz, my family comes from Mayo, my great grandfather sailed produce to Baltimore in skipjacks, there is a Dawson St near Holiday Pt., and the family cemetery was so close to the shore, they had to move it inland 50yds after a bad storm. Its still there on private property.

Always use a friction brake type.

Don't buy a ratchet type winch. You haven't lived until that spinning handle gets away from you and wacks your fingers!

I bought mine from Northern tool. $49/ half the price of Havencraft - same winch http://www.northerntool.com
