Keel Up?

Downwind go for it. Broad reach try keel half up. Close hauled, not if you want to go upwind!

My opinion, never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, sail your swing keel C-22 with the keel in any position but in the full down position. The boat's righting design comes from the keel being all the way down, pull it up and you loose stability. Take a look at the C-22 spec's. There is a reason why the wing keel version keel is so heavy, because to get the same righting, the shorter keel needs to be a lot heavier. Plus, take an unexpected knock-down, and the keel will likely come up easier and over she goes. Another reason why the C-22 class racing rules specifically address this situation and the keels are required to be left in their full down position.

I'm with captdon, My first swing keel I would motor with the keel up but when ever I raised the sails the keel came down. Any movement on the hull with the keel up puts stress on the keel winch this is why you tow the boat with the keel resting on the trailer.

The ability to raise a swing keel on a Catalina 22 is for trailering only, thinking in ones mind that it has other uses is uniformed and foolhardy. Yes, it will go over a shallow object but, it was not designed for that. The other blog mentioned, where the Catalina is compared to an Oday, there is no comparison, because the keels are totally different in that the Oday has all of keel weight built into the shoal draft design and a drop board that weighs nothing to help it point better. The Oday will sit higher on the trailer than the swing keel Catalina so the keel design between the two are different with different trade offs.

There are many other mfg of swing keel boats in which the keel swings completely up into the hull for beaching, again a trade off on the overall design, without part of the keel exposed to the water under the hull steerage is useless unless the motor is running and helping the rudder to steer.

Thank you all for the sage advice and experience, Sounds like I better go for a motor boat ride when shallow - but then I DO have a brand new Tohatsu 5 HP. (I read that Catalina suggests 4 - 6).

sunken sailboats

I only know of two incidents in which a sailboat was sunk and both of them were because they were being sailed with the keel up. Both racing and both running downwind with the keel up (that is cheating by the way). I would bet that if you gathered the data on sailboats sunk that would be one of the leading causes. I would not do it.

Both boats were renamed, by the way, after being retrieved from the bottom. Red October, a C-22 and This Side Up a C-25.
