I keep the swing keel up and snug...not tight. My thoughts are that if the keel can't move a lot then there will be minimal wear on the keel pivot pin. If you were to keep it down and the board did not lock up tight with the keel lock. it would swing back and forth (perp to the length) also when backing out of the slip and the tide was out...a lot of strain would be on the assembly if you rubbed the bottom. I am installing the 'shim kit' offered by catalina direct soon. As i will be sailing it in the ocean and want little chance of the keel swinging into the trunk with a knock down. This is a great little boat....just do the maint and it will last for many years..heck mine is a 79 vintage...Bill"Nameless" 79' c22Pt.Orange, FL
