I am moving up from a 20 foot Oday to a Catalina 25. I'm sold on the design and quality of the Catalinas. However, I am unsure of the various types of keels offered on the Catalina 25 models. Can somebody tell me what a Swing Keel is and how it functions? I've seen Fin Keel, Fixed Keel, Wing Keel. I'm familiar with those other types but unsure about the "Swing Keel". I am seeking a keel that will allow me to venture into the shallows when the lake level is down. Does the swing keel retract? Thanks, Jim Dandy

yes

Hi Jim, The swing keel does retract on a pivot point to allow access to shallow water and easier on-off trailer access. Regards, Chris

Swing Keel Info

Jim, The Catalina 25 swing keel is a 1,500 lb. iron casting which pivots at the bottom of the hull about a foot aft of the mast. There is a hefty crank powered steel winch assembly located below the companionway stairs to lift the keel. Swing keels require some preventative mantenance, and they don't tolerate or forgive neglect. That said, I think swing keels are a very versatile and desirable feature. The Catalina 25 swing keel seems to draw over 5 feet when down, and about 3 feet when all the way up. Unlike some other swing keel boats, the Catalina 25 will sail with the keel up, just not as well as it would with the keel down. -- Leon Sisson
