Hi. We reciently bought a Widgeon XDYA5065M82K. The keel trunk appeared to be cracked around the bottom on the inside of the boat but the trunk itself was solid (did not wiggle when pushed or pulled). I cleaned the boat really well and found that the actual fibreglass is not cracked. There is what appears to be a coating of paint, from the nonskid of the sole up the sides of the trunk, that gets much thicker as it starts up the trunk. The crack, all the way around the trunk, is where the "paint" makes a transition from thin to thick. I was able to get a tiny prybar under the thick section which shows that it is not adhered to the unscuffed fiberglass underneath. The previous owner said it did not leak. A fair amount of the thin paint is gone. What would be a recomended way to repair this situation? Thanks for your time.

Bob,
I would check out any of Don Casey's books on Fiberglass repair. You can probably find them at your local library.

If the CB trunk is not damaged itself, there really is no structural reason to make a repair. I'd give Rudy at D&R Marine a call for advice (508) 644-3001. He actually built WIDGEONS for a while in the 1990's and early 2Ks.

I seem to recall that my old 1969 Widgeon had a rubber-like coating on the inside of the hull serving as non-skid.... kind of like the paint used for pick-up truck bedliners or a car trunk liner. It was cracked in a few places.
