keel trouble

I have owned this boat for three weeks so I don't know alot about this boat. Last weekend when tring to retract the keel the cable that lifts the keel broke. I temporarely fixed that so I could get the boat out of the water. While on land i lifted the boat to find a deep groove in the keel well. I don't believe this cable has been put together correctly for a while now. Does anyone know how the cable is suppose to hook to the keel and what does the winch that picks the keel up look like and how does it sit in the boat.

The attachment is a "U" shaped Stainless bracket. I'll send photo of the bracket & winch later today.
