Keel saga part 2 (since posts fall off this forum so fast)..

Phase one of the CS-36M keel rebed is done. Other than having to spend $300 for tools (read as giant sockets and breaker bars) and having a 3/4" breaker bar shatter on one of the bolts (replaced for free), it went well. All of my prep work at separating was worth it as the hull came off in one clean easy lift to be set aside.

Chris took a video but had to go to work so I won't have it until tomorrow. Once the keel was separated, they set the hull on stands to the side with the load still on the crane while we cleaned up the mating surface. We applied packing tape to the hull for a mold release and applied epoxy and microballons (like peanut butta) to the top of the keel. They then picked the boat again and set her on the keel nice and slowly. I was too busy working to take pics.

After the hull was back on the keel with about 6,000 Lbs still on the crane, the boys tightened the keel bolt to draw her down. They then eased off and we torqued to 100 Lbs for now. I went around swiping off the excess (and there was a lot of it) and faired the joint as it oozed out.

So, she'll sit and cure overnight and then we'll lift her off again in the morning to apply 4200. Once that's done liberally, we'll reset her the last time and torque the keel bolts to full torque.

Then it's on to the rest of the job....

Nicely done and very well planned. I have seen 1/2 inch breaker bar fail but never a 3/4. It had to be bad when it left the factory. I hope nobody was hurt when it broke.

What prompted this R & R of the keel ?
Was the hull / keel joint leaking ? If not leaking how does one determine integrity of the connection.
Good work !

Ross, no, nobody hurt, thankfully.
MSter, there was movement in the keel during survey and a bit of seepage.

I was real happy with the stand. Not a bit of movement....

I'll take pictures of the mating surface today when we split it for the 4200.

I have seen men hit themselves in the face when a wrench slipped, it isn't pretty.

My brother-in-law was helping his Father work on the bathroom sink when he was a teen. His Father was tightening something and the monkey wrench slipped. Thinking nothing of it he asked Al for another tool...unfortunately Al had been hit in the head by the wrench and was out cold.

Charlie, I'll never mess with you. What and all, you breaking a 3/4" bar, and stuff. Awesome job, something I'd never attempt, yet you have done it professionally.

Marc, You don't have to worry. He had a six foot pipe on it. ;) Yea right.

Charlie, Have you ever checked the bolting charts for the correct torque on a 1 inch grade 8 bolt? You need a four foot pipe on the breaker bar.. It is in the 500-600 foot pound range. That is for steel to steel bolting on heavy machines.

That much torque would crush the fiberglass grid I'm afraid. The bolts may have been over torqued originally.
