Hi, I went ahead (while working on the trailer) and knocked out all the lose paint with a wire brush of the Keel put on a few new coats of Red Oxide Primer (Rustoleum) and then couple of coats of (Rustoleum) paint.
Is it ok what I did on this Cast Iron Keel?
Thanks Costy

When I bought the Mac 25 it came with a red oxide paint job. I wire brushed it and gave it another layer. Five years later it still looks good.
BTW I just repainted the trailer for the Cat 27 and found it faster to use an abrasive wheel with the angle grinder. It took the old paint off quickly and got it down to bare metal. I then used zinc chromate as a primer and covered that with a couple of coats of Rustoleum.

Now that you've done it I would go with it and see how it works. A lot probably depends on how long the boat is in the water and if it is fresh or salt water.

If I'm keeping the boat I'd probably pay and have the keel media blasted as that usually isn't very expensive.

Then I would of gone with an epoxy paint as there again for something the size of the keel it isn't going to cost that much.

Then if you want to go on either a bottom paint if it is going to be in the water all the time or something else if you wanted color and the epoxy wasn't the color you wanted.

Some primers like most rattle can ones are actually porous so not much good keeping water out, so what you put over them has to do that. I'm personally not a rustoleum fan, but have used it,

I di the exact thing that you did. When I got the boat the keel was a mess. The bottom paint had caused the metal to flake off. I ground it down to bare metal. Te used a rust converter, Rostoleum red oxide and grey Inductrial Rustoleum. It did not hold up for a season. The boat was never left in the water. I litterally had no money at the time and wass dying to go sailing. I would have goe with the epoxy or other coatings listed in this forum. I posted a zinc question but got little response. I think I am going to put a zinc on the keel. Strictly medicinal!!

If the the is iron this is the BEST solution. POR-15 rocks.
