My wife and I have just purchased our first sailboat from a good friend of ours. We stepped over the line from being former power boaters to our first sailboat a 1981 C30, #2232. With the purchase being at the end of the Michigan boating season, we've just had time for a couple of sails before haul out. Once the boat was put on her cradle I noticed a horizontal crack in the keel about 10 to 12 inches long on the port side towards the front of the keel(this crack seems to be where the keel bolts to the bottom of the hull). My friend told me that this crack has existed for a while(a few years) and he normally filled it at the beginning of the boating season. In addition, he would tighten the keel nuts down every year to the 50 to 60 required psi. My friend was told that this crack was referred to as the "Catalina Crack" and was further told not to worry about it as long as the crack did not stretch any further than the 12 or so inches it was currently at.Was wondering if other C30 owners have encountered this problem and what the remedy might be on a more permanenet fix than just "filling the crack for the season".
