Keel Problem......"The Catalina Crack"

My wife and I have just purchased our first sailboat from a good friend of ours. We stepped over the line from being former power boaters to our first sailboat a 1981 C30, #2232. With the purchase being at the end of the Michigan boating season, we've just had time for a couple of sails before haul out. Once the boat was put on her cradle I noticed a horizontal crack in the keel about 10 to 12 inches long on the port side towards the front of the keel(this crack seems to be where the keel bolts to the bottom of the hull). My friend told me that this crack has existed for a while(a few years) and he normally filled it at the beginning of the boating season. In addition, he would tighten the keel nuts down every year to the 50 to 60 required psi. My friend was told that this crack was referred to as the "Catalina Crack" and was further told not to worry about it as long as the crack did not stretch any further than the 12 or so inches it was currently at. Was wondering if other C30 owners have encountered this problem and what the remedy might be on a more permanenet fix than just "filling the crack for the season".

Common Problem

I posted a photo of this in Photo Forum - its still if you want to compare it to yours. It is listed under Catalina Smile. My surveyor mentioned that this is not a serious problem. Of course, you can see that my crack (referred to as the "Catalina Smile") is pretty small. I would fill it, fair it, and forget about it (thats what the yard said to do). Best Regards, Rob Rich

Rob is quite right. I have a 1982 C27 fin keel that exhibits the same crack. It should be sealed each season. I am not sure if the keel bolts and nuts in the C-30 are stainless steel but they should be. I was fortunate to find my Catalina with stainless keel bolts, but it still has steel nuts. I will be changing them this winter. This hardware lays in the bilge with water in it all the time. My bilge water is laidened with rust. I'd rather change the nuts than the keel!

Glass over it

The crack appears in front because the factory didn't glass over it there; the aft two thirds is glassed. I don't think anyone knows why; at least I haven't found anyone. I glassed over mine when I barrier coated the hull and haven't seen it since. 3 layers of overlapping 6.5 oz cloth, sanded and faired.
