i was gonna prep my keel this past weekend, but the boatyard guy didnt give me my free can of seahawk 1277 until today. but I've been doing some research. can you offer advice?
my bottom job was new when i got the boat. the paint job is tight. hardly any chipping paint. The keel was faired and looks good. but sitting over the past year i got a little rust on the keel. just surface rust that I can pretty much touch and it falls off.
I pressure washed the bottom and keel and got the loose stuff and chalky paint off. I plan on going over the keel with a wire brush.
A boatyard neighbor came over and was talking with me and suggested i Ospho the keel and said it didnt need much work. he is a professional capt working on 60' cat getting ready to charter in bahamas in May. He said just wire brush it, Ospho it, and paint right over it with antifoul.
I was thinking I would do a little more. Tell me if im on the right track.
1. wire brush it
2. leave the tight, intact, bottom paint on the keel
3. barrier coat over top of existing scheme with seahawk 1277
4. two or three coats of seahawk cuprikote antifouling (got 4 gallons from the same boatyard guy for $100!)
i do see some kind of compound showing through the bottom paint, obviously what they used to fair the keel.
oh, can I prime it and leave the bottom paint off until I get closer to splash?
