Due to extremely low lake levels, I am seeking information on the possibility of reducing the draft of my hunter 31'.

Gene: Mars Metals can make you a new keel or maybe modify yours. Just as a temp. solution that may be cheaper, just buy a shoal draft boat unit the water levels rise. Sell the boat when you have water under your keel and you will be money ahead.

Lucky you

Gosh, according to the latest water level reports, Lake Erie is 16" above low water datum. Here in Lake Huron, we are 4" below. We are down about 14" from the deepest we had last season. What were your levels like last year? We plan to just be more careful when leaving channels and entering harbours. We had no problems last year, but some people who were used to taking short cuts and who did not consult their charts found themselves in trouble. I guess we have always considered the low water datum readings on the charts to be the actual depths, and so been safe when there was more water beneath us than the chart indicated. This year, we'll be taking the chart readings literally and then adding a safety factor. If you modify your keel this year, what happens if they drop further next year? And buying a different boat sounds a bit radical too, doesn't it? Good luck, and hope for more heavy rains. John s/v Perennial

2 cents worth

I've read that the 31 and 34 have their ballest high in the keel. It may very well be possable to subtract and later add back a foot or so from the keel with out going broke. I'd consult a local yard and Hunter and see what can be done.

John, not that radical

John: When Gene prices out the cost to mod the keel versus buying another boat for a season or two and then reselling I'll bet he will be on the up side of the deal. This does not take into account what may happen to the resale on the H'31.
