I have a 1977 model cataline 22 which I wish to keep in the water. I wonder how often I need to pull the vessel out to check the keel pivot pin and hoist cable. also is it feasible to do the work myself or should I break down and pay someone. thanks.

Keel Inspection

I have an '86 that I removed the keel from last year. It needed some serious repair. The PO had replaced the pin but had done nothing with the oversized hole in the keel. I had the keel repaired (new ss bushing done at local machine shop) re-shaped the keel, inspected the cable and winch and replaces all other parts with Catalina Direct hardware. (Hangers, pin, turning ball and cable hase) Lucky I did because the pipe molded into the hull for the cable hose came out in may hand. epoxy repair held all summer and still looks good. The anti klunck pads also made a difference. Having done all this work myself in the back yard and hauling the 600# keel to the shop, I know the exact condition of my boat and will only inspect it before I go in and after I haul out. One of the benifis of the boat & trailer is that you can haul out anytime you want for an inspection. One other thing to consider, my mooring is in shallow water when the tide is out so I raise the keel when I leave the boat. this gives it 2 points of support, not just hanging on the pin and rocking on the mooring.

Keel Inspection

Charlie, I have a 74 catalina 22 that i just purchased and i am trying to fix. the previous owner had the boat for about 5 years and kept it in salt water. he did not do anything to the keel. you said that you removed the keel yourself. just exactly how did you do that? my boat is on a trailer but i don't know how i would get the keel out let alone handle a 600# weight without someone getting hurt. any info will be appreciated. thanks Paul Sattler pjsattler2@aol.com

Catalina keels

C-22 keels can be removed while the boat is on the trailer, but it isn't easy. You need to block the boat up higher. I used a floor jack, wedged into the trailer and lifted one side at a time, then used two floor jacks with two pair of custom made uprights to keep that keel upright. Taking it out and putting it back in took a lot of time and effort and I couldn't do it alone, it took two friends. If I had it to do over again, I'd have a yard do it. They have the equipment.

C22 Keel Inspection

I have a 73 Cat 22. It ha been stored out of water on a trailer for years and does not have a noise or vibration problem. Inspection can be accomplished by saising the keel slightle above the trailer cradel ( assuning you have the trailer) Then grab the aft end of the seing keel and attempt to move it back anf forth. (left to right) If you haar a noise and see excessive move movement at tje pin, you must repair it. Whether or not you need help depends on your tools and skills. Do you have a rolling floor jack? Have you an engine hoist or other lift to raise the boat off the keel?Dp you have medical insuranbce? Do you know someone who has perormed this repair?

Some issues

Keel inspection - yes, every year. Even in fresh water, need to check the hanger bolts to make sure they are tight. Can be removed individually, sprayed with LocTite, and put back (Catalina Direct). Fresh versus Salt Water - Have a 79 Cat 22 that spent lifetime in fresh water. When dropped and inspected keel, still all original parts. They were still sound. Dropping the keel - Two questions; how much do you like to work? Not a lot? Pay someone to do it. Second question - how much are you willing to spend? If you are the Frugal Sailor like myself, then you will save, literally, thousands of dollars, doing it yourself. Recommendation: Spend $20, and get Catalina Direct's "Dropping the Swing Keel" instructional video. It will give a you a very quick appreciation of how much effort will be required. It is also a very good way to safely, and easily, drop the keel. It was, surprisingly easy. Took two of us to take it out, and two to put it in; three hours out, and four hours in (had trouble lining up the keel hangers with the bolt holes - the boat had canted/settled a bit on the trailer while the keel was out). I really enjoyed myself - but I like working on my boat. If you are a "Do It Yourselfer" then I highly recommend getting on line with Catalina Direct. They have all of the parts, a technical support line, and plenty of instructional material for doing almost any repair you can think of, on your Cat 22 or Cat 25. Keel Alignment

Last year I took my keel out. That was pretty easy. It took two of us and we used an A frame hoist at our yacht club and a keel holder that a member in our fleet loaned us. The keel holder is basically a wooden dolly that holds the keel upright. Putting the keel back on was a harder because we had a hard time aligning the keel just right to get all the hanger bolts in. After about an hour of struggling we finally got it in. While we were sitting around afterwards replenishing our fluids, we started talking about things you could do to make that job easier and came up with the following solution (I should have drank those beers before I started the project): When reinstalling the keel, use some long (about 12 in.) bolts to line up the keel. Using the long bolts, the keel hanger can hang below the hull allowing you to see the threads you are trying to engage. Put the bolts in one at a time and move the keel as necessary to get the proper alignment to get the bolts started by hand. hand thread in the bolts until they have gone in at least 4 or 5 turns. Now lower the boat onto the keel until you can push the hangers up into the hull. Now remove one of the long bolts and replace it with a new hanger bolt and washer and snug it up. Repeat until all the regular bolts are in and tighten them down.
