All of the information that I could gather on my newly aquired O'Day 25 indicated that the shoal keel was 30" long and the centerboard about 5 feet. I pull the boat out today to find out the keel is only 14" long. Did they make 2 versions of the shoal keel in 1979?? Thanks

keel length

Can you post some photos, both inside and out? Either there is a centerboard hiding somewhere, or someone did a bad thing.

centerboard

Ed, I have a centerboard. My question was about the keel length. Thanks

Keel dimensions

The O'Day 25 keel is 14", measured from the hull bottom to the bottom edge of the keel. That is the correct measurement. It's fore / aft measurement is 80" plus a section about 29" long that tapers forward from the centerboard pivot point.

Length vs Depth

I can't say for sure, but I BELIEVE that when O'Day lists the keel depth (use depth, instead lf length, it's less confusing) they're talking about the depth from the waterline. Of course, even that is a "theoretical" waterline, as yours will change depending on what you have on board. Keels are not typically measured from the bottom of the hull. While I don't remember the exact specifications, I believe the keel with the centerboard up draws 2.5', and with it down draws 6'.

terminology

Sorry, I read "shoal keel" and thought you meant a short version of a full keel. I thought the thing the centerboard swings up into is a trunk. I was imagining someone chopping down a fin keel 25.

Terminology

Actually, O'Day called their centerboard version a shoal keel with a centerboard. The boat sails OK with the centerboard completely up. Of course, dropping it improves the performance sailing upwind. It's funny that the terminology threw you that direction. After owning an O'Day 25 for three years, I went to purchase a Coronado 35 with a shoal keel, and was surprised to find that it DIDN'T have a centerboard. Same confusion as you, but from the "other direction." Interestingly, apparently using a centerboard for "shoal keel" boats was a common enogh practice back then (my Coronado is a '71 model, and the O'Day is a '74), that Coronado explained in their manual why they didn't use a centerboard. The main reason I was able to understand what was being asked here was that I recognized the picture as being "normal" for the boat, so I knew what the measurements should have been.
