We had our boat the "Arabella" out yeaterday I we noticed that when we get in a groove with the wind that the keel hums or vibrates. Is this normal? Any suggestions on if this a problem or not. Thanks

The keel cable

It's probably the keel cable. Try loosening it another quarter turn or so after the keel is down. Fair winds, Jim

It isn't humming, it's purring

The "hum" is normal for the 22. It is the keel lift cable resonating. I was told when I first got my boat many years ago that this is the boat's way of telling me it is happy! Think of it as the Cat purring. If it really bothers you, you can play with the tension by tightening and loosening the lift cable until it stops or hits a frequency you like. (think guitar strings) It won't hurt anything.

Keel Cable resonanse.

My 80 C22 did the same so I always backed it off 1 full turn everytime she sang and it worked well. This spring when I painted the boat I reversed the cable where it moounted on the keel. Now it SCREAMED rather than sang. It was so loud that I finally dove down and reversed it. One turn now removes the noise and calm has returned aboard the "Krusty Krab". Ray
