Keel holes

I found that the diesel blew a gasket two years ago and fuel, oil, etc. leaked into the bilge. Thereafter a local mechanic drilled these holes to allow the liquids to weep out. Apparently the boat has been sitting on the cradle for at least 12 months waiting for the weeping to finish.
That was a remarkably bad idea on the mechanic's part. He took a reasonably well contained hazard and drilled holes allowing it to leak out into whatever environment the boat was in, and in the process compromised one of the more structurally important parts of the boat. If the same mechanic has done any other work on the boat I'd expect it to be of equally questionable quality. Whatever caused the engine to blow a gasket probably compromised it as well. So now you have a boat with holes in the keel sump, a potentially worthless engine, and unknown other problems. There are better boats out there that will cost you far less money, time and aggravation to get sailing.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I think of what a great nautical insult that is, like, "Don't be such a keel hole." It just sounds right.
