Thank you to Pete, John, Rick, & Jim for your response to my trim question. Could you also help me with another concern as a new owner of this 1994 40.5. The bilge is very deep and the only ballast appears to be the winged bulb itself. Is the 4' fiberglass keel stub supporting the entire weight of the bulb? Has anyone had any problems with this engineering? What are the two tiny holes (1/4") aft, just above the bulb on either side of the keel? This keel design is much different to my 35.5 and puzzling. I don't think there is anything particularily unusual about a composite keel. Surveyor raised no concerns. Access is a challenge, but a deep sump can be otherwise preferable. I don't remember the holes you mention. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Had a great V32 before; had this since December. Also a '94. Rick D.

Keel answers
The 40.5 has a void area in the aft section of the keel that free floods so the holes let the water in and out. When she comes out of the water there should be water streaming out the tow lower holes. If not, they may be pluged. There are 3 large keel bolts that hold the lead ballast on the keel. I recently added a PSS shaft seal and since my bilge is now always dry, I was able to notice a large SS washer next to the aft bolt/nut that does not have a washer. The other 2 bolts appear to has a washer. Does anyone (Hunter technical guy included) think this may be a problem?
