I hauled my boat out of Lake Michigan this weekend at the close of the summer season and found that my keel was gone. Other than the obvious questions (yes, I suspected something was wrong)- anyone have an estimate as to how much this is going to cost me to replace and install a new (or used) keel?

Keel gone bye bye

IF the only thing that happened is the bolts unscrewing out of the bottom, then all you will have to do is replace the two lower halves of the swing pin, bolts and keel. Less than $1,000 should handle that. However, if something else broke loose, you could have a couple of $1,000 involved in structural repairs. Try to re-construct where it may have fallen off by thinking through when you last cranked it up and whether it dropped close to the launching ramp. You may be able to locate it with a metal detector or one of the sonar rigs that find sunken objects. This should save you $500 or better. The bolts and lower pin mounts are available from Cat-direct and aren't too pricey. Less than $100 should replace both sides and the 4 bolts. some of the other folks on the forum should be able to give you some links to find a used keel. There needs to be some way that the bolts could be safety wired like aircraft fittings and bolts to keep them from backing out. Good luck finding the keel.
