Sometime over the summer, I think maybe during tropical storm Irene, my keel sustained damage. It looks like she sailed over, then backed down upon her mooring chain, and the chain became caught for a brief time on the after end of the keel. At the bottom 24", on the after edge, just above the wing, gelcoat is completely gone, and about 2" of iron is exposed on one side of the keel, and about 1" on the other side. Since she's in salt water, deterioration is happening quickly. I've only inspected the damage with a mask and snorkel. I plan to haul in January to repair the damage. Any advice as to how to proceed with the repair would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no gelcoat on the cast iron keel of a 361. You probably just messed up the paint or barrier coat that some people put on the keel before the bottom paint. It is easy to fix next time you do a bottom job.

On the keel you will find a few layers of epoxy paint, then primer and then some layers of antifouling. All could be different colors! As long as keel bolts are OK and there was no damage to the point the keel is attached to the hull don't worry about any "sort of paint" going off. It's only iron. You can fix it any time you get the boat out of the water.
