Does anyone know where I can get a new handle for the keel cranking handle. The mechanism itself is fine but the handle is rough and rusted. 79 C-22.

One of the characteristics of old boats is that many of the components are no longer manufactured or have been redesigned over the years. Not only that, but a previous owner could have replaced or modified them. Posting pictures might help identify part models. If you have a working winch handle that is a little rough and rusted the best course of action might be to try and restore it by removing the rust, sanding down and adding some protective paint. There are new winches in the market with automatic clutches but at $160 a pop they are a little expensive. A warning has been issued about using trailer winches to replace the keel winch as should the handle slip from the hand it could injure the operator and a crashing keel can damage the boat. As a last resort option owners have a machine shop manufacture unavailable parts. Old boats and work go together. Yes adapting parts is a good alternative, take your old handle to a Chandlery store and see if you can find a new handle to match the opening on your old one.
Bill and Kathy, simple solution. Have the old one sandblaster and just repaint it, maybe even take a course wire brush in your drill and clean it up yourself and paint it, or..... take it to a shop that does powder coating. Regardless of the price of a new proper keel winch, remember, it will be much cheaper than the repairs should an issue arise with using a trailer winch. Frank Butler made the decision to use a clutched winch for the swing keel for good reasons.

I can't speak to the old style-- but if you search for Dutton Lainson you will find replacement handle options out there including a ratcheting option. You'll have to check if any of the new handles can mate the old style winches--- maybe??
Contact Fulton, they make the winch that CD sells for the older C22.

Another option for rust removal is using electrolysis (using a battery charger- google electrolysis for rust removal). Works very easily, then you can paint the handle.
Post a picture of the handle, the older ones do not engage with a simple bolt and nut like a boat winch, mine is a clip and spring attachment that is part of the clutching mechanism. See mine below Its rusty too, gonna rehab it soon.

The handle is longer on this one it's the one I purchased for my boat. I swapped out the drum from the new one and put it on my old winch. Problem solved. You could also find a new trailer winch at a Walmart or a Sports Academy or Authority. They sale a $20.00 winch that has a short handle that would work too.
I'm replacing my keel cable. I am also replacing the ball and pin, and the volcano tube. I bought the rebuild kit. Do you think that I should go ahead and get a new winch also? I'm a little concerned about how small the diameter of the old winch drum. Otherwise, the winch still works fine. Thanks for the Amazon tip. Kevin
Yes but go to Amazon.com and get the K1051 0101 Fulton winch for $67.00. It's the same winch. The handle is too long but you can swap out the drum from the new one and put it on the existing winch. That's what I did and it works great saved over a hundred dollars from the price of a certain Catalina parts dealer website. (CD).
They have to have awnings in Belize, don't they? Maybe not at a RV Center, but somewhere I would think.
Fulton has repair kits. I just need to measure and order the proper repair kit. Have it shipped to my daughter in the States and bring it back on our next trip. If we ship it direct we get hit with a 40% Customs Fee. Not nice.
