Just had a prepurchase survey on a 1979 Catalina 30. Noticed that the fairing compound at the fore and aft and on both sides of the keel, had peeled off or cracked to some small extent. Surveyor said this is due to flexing of the keel, is faily typical and is nothing to be concerned about. The keel bolts looked good inside the bilge. Does anyone have any info regarding this???? Thanks for your help!!!! Please respond to stevfran@earthlink.net

Seems to be common

When Rob hauled out his C30 for sale, he repaired those cracks as best he could but the surveyor & boatyard both said they'll come back. It's just something that happens. If the surveyor isn't worried, I would get that in writing first & then not worry about it.

The cracks you refer to are fairly common with all catalina's. If the surveyer says that it looks okay-your probably okay.

Not to Worry

Lots of boats do this..I raced on a 41 Tartan for six years and every year we had to fair in the keel..I retorqued the keel the first couple of years and quit doing that because it just kept on cracking anyway. so it's nothing to worry about..just get out your filler and grinder : ) Mike s/v "Chute the Breeze"
