Has this happened to anyone else. Needed to tension the rig, shrouds were real sloppy. Yes, we did beat some friends in much larger boats. When closing up the boat pumped the bilge like always. The only thing that goes into the bilge is the drain from ice box. About 40 lbs ice is always about 10 pumps. Well, much to my amazement it took 50 pumps to empty the bilge. Pulled the floor board and checked and water was seaping in thur the keel. Wiped it dry and about a gallon an hour was coming in. Pulled the boat and slight crack at the front of keel. I know a few 28's that had thea problem but never a 27. Any comments would be welcome. Joe

When I had my boat Surveyed this spring it was pointed out that the bulkheads ahead of the keel were cracking away from the hull and needed to be re-glassed. I wonder if this would allow the hull to flex causing the keel to crack? Mine is also a 27

Keel Crack
I replaced my port bulkhead last season. After much thought I recheck the tension on the upper shrouds. Way to much tension. i had borrowed a freiens gauge. It has to be wrong. When backing of the tension could see the crack close up. Will repair this weekend. Wanted it to dry out some before I start. Will also use a vacume pump to evacuate any water in there. A very good leson learned. Old boats get brittle and crack. Will reinforce it with mat and glass cloth and use west system. Love the boat want it to last another 30 years.

I had the same thing happen on my 32 ODay 2 yrs ago after a short haul the boat started to take on water now I know the yard did not drop it or bump it and when we rehauled it I discovered a semi circle crack on the aft section of the keel right where it meets the hull, I have a keel centerboard model and the engine was right above the area where the crack was in the bilge. After further inspection of the bottom there was evidence of damage that was repaired and I think the PO grounded this boat. I duct taped my shop vac to the crack and sucked all the water out,then poured some thinner in the bilge and sucked that through to clean it well then I sucked West System through untill I was satisfied it was filled before laying some glass mat over the crack.

Thanks for that tip. Never thought of pulling the West thru with vacume. Should make a much stronger repair. Got to love this place, always get help here.
