Does anyone have experience with the VECO Keel Cooler used by Frigoboat or others on the Danfoss BD compressor? What about performance at seawater temperatures of 86 degrees F.? Was the compressor installed further than the 5 ft. away from the cooler as recommended by the manufacture? Have you experience any refrigerant leakage at the keel cooler?

Keel Cold!

I installed the Frigoboat 12v keel cooled system on my 1986 First 42 last summer. We live and sail in sub tropical Florida, 86 degree water in the summer. The unit will freeze anything solid, including beer. It draws minimal amp hrs compared to the Adler Barbour ( I owned two of those on past boats and was happy with them at the time). The two nicest things about the Frigoboat are 1) no noise and 2) low battery drain. I love the unit Steve Fredrick

Frigoboat unit

Thanks for the reply Steve, I have recommended several of these Keel cooler models for small boxes not operated in the tropics. The Frigoboat unit has a two speed option,do you know which speed yours is set at? Which Model compressor do you have BD35 or BD50?

keel cooler and speed control

The Keel Cooler is designed to operate in tropical waters. Just as most water cooled systyems are. The difference is the keel cooler makes use of the highly efficient water cooled system without the use of pumps, strainers, hoses, etc. All systems now come with a user selectable 4 speed selection board. This is quite differant than most other systems that do not allow the speed to be changed for your particular conditions. The current frigoboat Air and Keel Cooled systems come standard with an electronic, automatic speed control. These units will adjust the speed of the compressor according to varying icebox conditions and can be overridden in order to select the speed manually.
