rusty keel
I'm assuming you want to clean it up? just paint it? Or do you want to fair it? Its best to get it off the boat to do this project, this is the worse part of the project for most. You need to build a sled, a couple can be seen here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/rwahlfel/www/c22maint.htm This will allow you to control the 550 lbs. If you just want to get rid of the rust and paint it, you can use a wire wheel on a grinder (labor intense) or have it sand blasted (most have it sand blasted) then treat the rust with a preventer and paint. If however you want to cover the keel and fair it, have it sand blasted then treat it with a rust preventer, cover it with epoxy, fair both sides. By far this is the best way. Or you can opt to replace it with one of the new lead keels. If your planning on paying to have the work done, you should really consider one of the new keels and have it delivered piggy back with a new boat at a dealer saving the shipping cost. Good luck with your project.
