I recently put the Venture 222 that I bought used last year in the water for the first time. In calm water everything is fine, but as seas pick up water comes into the cabin through the keel cable hole. How is this supposed to be prevented?

I have a 22' MacGregor Venture 1972. Mine always spurted water when there was a chop or I sailed fast. I now keep a roll of 2" silver tape at the winch and wrap the cable from about 4" below where the cable exits the tube and continue it about 2" above this exit. Don't worry about the tape restricting the movement of the cable as it does not. Each time I lower the keel I check the tape and squeeze it with my hand. Works like a charm. Novelman

Winch cable

Novelman here again. The other problem I had with my 22'1972 MacGregor Venture was water squirting up from the hole in the cockpit just above the space the swing keel goes into. I finally bought several inexpensive rubber stoppers and ground them off to fit snugly into the hole when I am in rougher water.Just remember to remove it when you are docked, anchored or the boat is on the trailer. And, don't pound it in, just push it in with your foot.

significant leak

Thanks for the response Novelman, but there seems to be alot of water getting in through this opening, is there no more permanent solution?

Just stick a rag

in the rubber part around the cable. No Problem, also as to water coming into the hole in the cockpit, I just bought a sink plug that already fit the hole and use it when that starts to happen. Even put a chain on the plug and permanently attached it to the side of the hatchway, where it can be accessed easily. Neither problem is anything major!

Water in boat

Not that I know of. BUT, if you add tape to the cable AND squeeze against the cable with yoy hand, the incoming water should be minor. Also, about the water coming up the cockpit drain, I added a screw with a loop to the rubber plug to more easily remove and placement it. All I use is a large sponge in the cabin to sop up any minor water entering. Novelman
