I recently acquired an oday 22,I am doing a full over haul of the boat and I am thinking about removing the keel.My question is,do the keel bolts extend to the bottom of the keel and do they thread into a nut arrangement there?Any tips on removal would be appreciated.Blair

Its unclear from your post if you mean the Oday 22 or the 23; either way, there are no keel bolts. Both models had the ballast molded into the hull, at least for all of the configurations I am aware of. Maybe one of the earlier models of these boats used a bolted on stub keel, but I have never seen one. No keel bolts are one less thing to worry about!

Sure there Are...Early O'days had Cast Iron Keels
The year is important. Several of the early O'Days had cast iron shoal draft keels. I have a 1973 23, and the iron keel is bolted on with keel bolts. You can see them in the bilge. I believe the early generation was up through 1974 with extra shrouds/chainplates and split backstay. Then O'Day went to encapsulated lead. Similar configuration with the 25, as I have compared keel bolt inspection notes with an early 25 owner. I have never dropped my keel, but another 23 owner at my marina did to reseal a leaking hull joint. Its a chore at 1200 pounds. He said bolts are threaded into top of keel.

Blair, the question is which model do you have,
and what year is it? If it is a full keel, the bolts are embedded in the keel which project into the boat. If it was a centerboard model, most of the centerboard trunk were made of cast iron which rusted and expanded into the centerboard housing and restricted the centerboard from going up or down. The cast Iron centerboard housing had keel bolts also. They were also embedded in the keel housing and projected into the boat. If you are doing a full makeover on the centerboard model, make sure you drop the centerboard ( it is connected underneath the keel like the 23 and 25. Check the archives for recent info) scrape the inside and seal it with good underwater epoxy sealer. This will minimalize any future centerboard problem you may have. The 25's had integral keel housings with the centerboard trunk built-in in the hull so that there are no keel bolts, just the centerboard pin bolts. r.w.landau
