Does anyone know the correct torque value for the 5/16" keel bolts on a Catalina 22? I have heard all kinds of numbers for this. I have a torque wrench so this will not be a problem if I know the right number. Thanks again. Dale

Here's an article from one of the C22 fleets about the values. IT's fairly light with the blue Loctite. "The 2006 online discussion of the topic focused on what the torque value tables recommend for 316 stainless steel 5/16" bolts. All the online references gave the same answer which was that the correct torque value was 138 in./lbs. or 11.5 ft./lbs. " From http://www.c22pdx.org/

You'll likely get many opinions on this, everyone will agree to use Blue Lock Tite. (clean with acetone first) I can tell you we have removed many C22 keels where I live. We always clean the inserts using a bottom tap then blow out using compressed air. We toque to 20 foot lbs and have never broken a bolt while installing a keel. I can't ever remember any bolts falling out either. The C22 owners to the south of us (GA) also use the 20 foot lb mark. In the end its going to be up to you, after all its your boat and your keel. Getting out broken bolts or replacing inserts isn't fun. Having your keel fall off from loose bolts, well that would be a bad day too. Good Luck

bolts from CD
I will be getting the new bolts from CD. Does anyone know what grade these bolts are. Of all the things that I have done to this boat, and there are a ton of them, the keel bolts make me the most nervous. Ken, how much lock tite do you use? I know that will the bolt set that CD sells, the tube of blue lock tite is very small. Thanks Dale

One can now buy Lock Tite in a stick, (kind of like a tube of chap stick) I have switched over to this stick, no more messy liquid and you can drag the bolt through it. Once on one side of the bolt it will easily coat every thread. Pick up one of Lock Tite sticks, you will never again find your bottle turned over and have leaked out everywhere in your toolbox. If you go to the Lock Tite sight and look at the data on the primer you'll find its 85% acetone. If you run out of the primer grab Momma's fingernail polish remover to finish cleaning the bolts. I'm pretty sure CD's bolts are 316

Ken, Thanks for the info. I did not know that you could get lock-tite in a stick. That will be my next purtchase. Do you happen to know if 316 stainless bolts come in a hardness grade? I know you can buy bolts in a 3 up to an 8. The torque values are very differant for these bolts. Also are the bolts you are using come from CD or are they bolts that you purchased some where else? I bought a bag 25 from my local West Marine store, they didn't really want to keep the remaining 21 (no call for them) so I made a deal and took the bag. IF there is a WM close to you give them a call. Stainless does come in different hardness take a look at page 3072 of McMaster Carr's Catalog, a bit on the pricey side and really no need. Between four owners including my self we have removed all our keels fair-ed and replaced them in the last two years. We use the torque wrench religiously and haven't broken any bolts. One owner did take Catalina Directs advise and went to 25 foot lbs. He later told us he was sweating bullets by the time he got there. Also said never again. None of us every reuse the old bolts or lock washers.
