Does anyone know what the setting is on the keel bolts on a 1985 22foot hunter? There are two 5/8 bolts. Should I use locktite on the bolts? I have heard people say to use 3m 5200 at the base of the keel. It is on the trailer so it will not drop down much. I could jack the boat up to get more clearance if I have to.

P.s. I forgot to say this is a fixed keel, I think 800 lbs. cast iron.

Thank you for your help
Rick

Rick, it sounds like you intend to drop the keel. What are your reasons for this? Are you sure there are only two keel bolts? My 2nd boat - a Capri 22 - has six keel bolts that look to be ~ 7/16 and Catalina recommends ~ 35 ft-lb for those. I have not personally done the job but I believe that 5200 is used for this since it is a strong adhesive as well as a sealer.

To be sure to get the right information, I'd contact Hunter.

Hey Clark thanks for the reply. Yes it only has 2 bolts. I have the 2 nuts removed now and it dropped down about 1/8 inch. It is sitting on the center board of my trailer. When I pulled the table off to check the bolts one was just a little snug and the other hanging on by 1 1/2 threads. I was lucky I decided to check it when I did.

Thanks again
Rick

Once you find out from Hunter what the torque should be, make sure the threads are clean on bolt and nut and slightly lubricated (blue Loctite?) before torquing the nuts. BTW, your trailer may not be adjusted properly. If I read your last post correctly, you removed the nuts and the keel dropped ~ 1/8". Was there a gap prior to removal of the nuts? It would seem to me that half the weight of the boat should be supported by the keel and with nothing else going on, the keel should not have moved when you released the tension on the bolts. I guess it depends on what is directly under the trailer keel support board. If the board is spanning two trailer frame sections, it might sag enough to give you that gap. In any case, you'll need enough room between the keel and hull to sorta clean and inject 5200 prior to retorquing the bolts.

I hope someone else steps in and adds the voice of real experience doing this job. Some of these techniques I'm familiar with and some not.

Hey Clark, I called a # for hunter down in Fl. All I get is a recording.I will try again tomorrow. I am like you on the two bolts. If one lets go you are screwed. Seems like you would want no less than three.
When I said it dropped about 1/8", it could have been less. I put the nuts back on just to take the weight off the center board.

Thanks again
Rick

Hey Clark, I just got a call from Hunter and they told me to torque them to 97. I think that will be one of my first chores tomorrow morning.

Thanks again
Rick

Good to know Rick. You might consider adding that info to the Hunter 22 site. Someone here started one:

Best of Luck!

Hello Clark. I think I will do that. It might come in handy for someone else.
