Keel Blistering

I had my 2004 H33 hauled for transport from NJ to Florida and discovered a lot of blistering on the keel. Very surprising since I was only launched in May. They're being repaired under warranty. Florida Yacht Charters in Miami Beach has been outstanding with their assistance. Especially so since I didn't even buy my boat from them. I will use them though when it's time to move up. Keep a lookout for blisters on the keel, not gelcoat, when you guys have your boats hauled for the winter. John H33 Two And Two

Doubt that they are blisters.

John: Your keel is lead and I doubt that it has actually blistered. Chances are this is the anti-fouling paint. I have had the same thing with our H'31. The hull has never had a single blister in 17 years.

Agree with Steve

Your keel is for sure lead. Lead can't blister. Improperly applied bottom paint will however lift off. I would suspect that the paint was applied directly over a poorly preped surface. Good thing here is that it's a much easier fix but this time make sure it's done right.

John -

Moved the boat to the south shore last week for the winter. Was out Sunday in 34 kts max wind - what a great boat! Good luck and enjoy the warm weather and sailing in your new state. Gregg

You're both right.

Blistering probably wasn't the best choice of words. I took up the issue regarding the bottom prep with my dealer and they insist that it was done right (no surprise there), but Hunter made the repairs under warranty. I still wonder though why my bottom was in such poor shape after only a couple of months in the water.

I am about to purchase a Hunter 33. Anyone out there with experiences on this new design?
