I've been having a bit of trouble uploading this movie but I'm going to try once more. Open the link to my website and then click on the Kayak mpeg. Third times a charm (hopefully).

WOW!!

My wife agrees with me that it looks dangerous. Any info where it was taken? I am thinking it was possibly in Hawaii where there are many of these "big fish" this time of year. Wish the movie had been a lot longer.

No idea where it was shot

A friend forwarded it to me with no info. The thing that amazed me most was that the kayak was completely submerged for quite some time. It must have been pushed a ways below the surface. Kudos to the paddler who stayed in his seat and pulled off a perfect eskimo roll when he got back to the surface. Bob V

Japanese?

The guy filming sounds Japanese. Maybe a tourist somewhere or maybe it was filmed in Japan. Isn't that one of the countries that still go whale HUNTING? Maybe this is revenge! Pretty dramatic footage no less, thanks for sharing.

AMAZING! *Yks Was the person Hurt?

I never realized those animals were sooo big! The kayaker should not have been so close, I would expect!

Looks like the Pacific NW to me

Last year, we went on a whale watching tour from Port Townsend, WA up to Friday Harbour, and had one of the whales do that leap out of the water just 50 feet in front of the boat. Naturally, my old out-dated digital camera is so slow, all I got was the splash at the end. There were a number of kayak'ers out that day as well all looking for whales, and the background scenery looks about the same.

Thanks for clearing that up John

Seems like it was a hoax and I do not have to sell my kayak. I live across the sound from Port Townsend where breaching whales is not an uncommon sight. I have been within 50 feet of whales (not breaching). I always thought they were quite aware of my location and an accidental collision was unlikely, but you never know. The thing about the video that baffled me was how would it be possible to submerge a kayak completely. There is a lot of bouyancy in one of those hulls. Staying in the seat and keeping your cool throughout that experience also seems to defy belief (rightly so apparently), but I was unaware that the paddler was fueled by POWERADE. That explains everything ;-) Bob V

frightening

I'm leading a group of 16 undergrads to circumnavigate Isla Espiritu Santo by sea kayak during Spring Break to study the natural history of Baja. You can imagine the concern when one of my students came across that clip after googling on how to do a roll. I assured her, of course, that if a broaching orca lands on you, you no longer need to worry about snapping a roll.
