Oday 32 ft. myers
On other forums there is usually an area for newbies to introduce themselves to a new group. In the absence of that, I'd like to say Hi!!! I just found myself the new owner of a 32 ft. Oday. Such a deal I found so here we go again. Three years ago I sold my liveaboard cutter (Willard 8 Ton) and moved back to my childhood home in Kansas due to family obligations. All life's changes back in place and I have returned to sunny S.W. Florida. This week I tracked down a rumored fire sale on an Oday32. I'm sure some here have chased some of these as well. I found a much loved 32 ketch, kept always on a lift, completely equipped with all the gear needed to just GO. Low hour Westerbeke and crisp sails with no discernible issues. The owner had passed away and his wife was immediately moving back to her native Germany. Sold! Headed to the boat yard to freshen the bottom, do some upholstery and freshen the boot and cove stripes. I would enjoy any discussions of interest regarding any peculiarities of these vessels or improvements made that seem to offer good advantages.

Welcome to the merry mob. Just about everything can be found here at SBO in general and this is a treasure trove of information on Oday in particular. Again welcome.

Welcome and congratulations. I assume it's the boat posted on Yacht World. You bought it right!!
For about the same price you could have purchased the boat below. Would have been interesting to see you make it to Panama in that.

I can't say enough about what great deals these O'day are.

I hope to hear more of your adventures.

Welcome aboard! We're a pretty casual group. Sounds like you have a great adventure ahead of you. Please keep us posted so that we can live vicariously through you.

Also, when you are able to, pictures are a big help when you have questions or want to provide information, kinda helps to cut through the different nomenclature that we have for things and their placement.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and warm welcome. I didn't see the listing in Yacht World. Found this one behind a home in Charlotte county Fl. The cost was less than the price of that aluminum v-hull pictured. Truly amazing bargain! On another forum dedicated to fans of the Italian made Alfa Romeos, We often marvel at how the Alfa Spiders from the 70s 80s and 90s have remained such a bargain relative to the joy and pleasure of owning and driving one of these delightful little cars. Sounds like maybe the Odays enjoy a similar advantage. Great when you buy em, less so when you sell. Headed to the boatyard in Placida Fl. to freshen stuff up and plan to start full time cruising this coming winter. Perfect time to head south. Much more to come.
Highest regards,
Darrell

If someone could offer a tutorial of placing pictures in these posts I'll insert pictures of our humble beginnings.

Thanks,

Thanks, that should help. By the way, I looked at the Yacht World site and found all of the 32s listed were at least 10K higher than our agreed price. Rather lucky than good!

Darrell

The pending sale I found was listed at 12,000. If you paid $10,000 less I need you to come along next time I buy a car.

Nice to have you aboard!

I must admit that I was not aware of a center cockpit 32. Very interesting boat. It looks like it would be an ideal single handed or small crew cruiser. Wow and you bought it at a price most people pay in Marina fees.

Now get to work on those photos!!

I believe that we have a very well maintained 32 that just arrived on our marina in Urbanna. Nice looking boat.

ODay 35 Beaufort, NC
back in the day allied was also making a thirty two ketch called a seawind I think. it didn't have an aft cabin though and no quarter berths. I looked at one once that was for sale, extremely heavy, it had a 40 HP westerbeke in it. very pretty boat and a real blue water boat. the o'day is likely a little more geared for coastal cruising and accomodations and likely sails better with a fin keel and spade rudder. The seawind was an aft cockpit ketch so the rear mast was right in front of the companionway, another negative in my mind but others might say it gives a good hand hold when coming on deck or going below.

I'm familiar with Allieds and have always liked the boats they built. I believe the first F'Glass circumnavigater was an Allied. The Oday is definitely more suited to coastal cruising with its centerboard and lighter displacement. My previous cruiser was a Willard 8 Ton with long full keel and 18,000 lb. disp. on a 30 ft. hull. It will be a large change from one to the other.
Much more to follow.
Regards, Darrell
