Just thinking,"ankle biter ports"

Was washing down my 27 this morning and got bit one more time by the Gray ports.Got me to thinking if this was design error or laziness by Hunter.Seems to me that the engineer/designer at Gray probably meant for boat builder[Hunter in this case]to trim spigot flush with trim ring after installation thus making one port fit almost any thickness cabin side.Obviously the port was not specifically designed for Hunter as the drain angle would have been done with a little more care. Hopefully JCII will run across this and give his thoughts and insight. In any case the ankle biters are going to get cured unless someone can give me good reason not to.

Good plan in my book.

I just bought an H27 two weeks ago. There's no question about the ports being ergonomic, if my toes could hold a belt sander they'd get the job done! There can be little question that the ports were just grabbed from a parts bin and not designed with the H27 in mind. Opening the ports after a rain always wets the cushions if I don't have a towel ready. Hope someone has had success with trimming the ports and will share technique and long term result report (more than one season). Thanks in advance - Mike

I have discovered mine are not equal...

ordered replacement ports and did all .. but not all ports are created equal.. guess they have no bill of rights.. but, I do, so I should be able to walk by each and every one and get by with a pass on the ankles.. my front ones stick out way too far.. JC11 suggested cutting off the excess.. I think he said to use a ______ saw.. I just can't remember the most important word to that phrase. JOHN HELP! please.

Pleasing Ports

I took a belt sander to mine. While the boats are slightly different, the ankle-biting ports seem to be identical. Bu holding the belt sander in a somewhat inverted angle, I wm able to maintain the slight sill over the top of the port while smoothing the bottom lip down to a reasonable (<1/2") length. This saves the useless drains in the lower sills. Then I opened the ports and drilled a new drain, beginning a little closer to the actual closure, and sealed the sides with pipe cleaners dipped in epoxy-just in case my drilling was errant. The end result is port inserts that look okay and do not bark your ankle every time you waky by. See you on the Bay!!!
