Heater blower

We just got a propane heater that has a heat unit and is basicly a heat exchange unit. It has two hoses, one goes in the cabin the other has a fan in it and goes out in the cockpit with the unit. Turn on the fan and in comes the warm air with out ahving to worry about lack of oxygen. We just got it and have only used it once so far. Rob S/V Euphoria

Have you tried a first mate?

The Admiral has to approve first. Best idea is to get one that cleans and mops. They make great heaters and no exhaust to worry about. And you can still use the pot idea. Can I crew on your boat? Just think think how popular you'll be! Keep it up, Ctskip

Dress Warmly

I hate to state the obvious but some nice fleece pajamas work very well to fight the chill. Throw in some hot coffee or tea and you are set. Simple, effective and very environmentally friendly. Propane in a sailboat is scarey!!! Especially in a portable heater, especially using disposable bottles. Since water is usually pretty warm and it warms the boat it is rare for the inside of a closed boat to get much below about 50 degrees at least where I sail. Even at 32 degrees if you are out of the wind it is easy to stay warm. The great thing about it being a little cold is that body heat feels so much better. Nothing better than snuggling up in a warm sleeping bag with that significant other.

Monoxide Detector

I personally wouldn’t use any (non-electrical) heat source that wasn’t vented. If you already operate a non-vented heater, I would highly recommend a carbon monoxide detector. You may not wake up dead from you heat source – but that nagging loss of memory may not just be old age. I was going to add something else, but I’ve forgotten.

As a foot note to reply #1, the Wallas furnace...

I reference (model 1500 I think) mounts on a bulk head and draws combustion air and expels exhaust gases through the same vent pipe mounted in the coach roof. No worries about carbon monoxide entering the interior of the boat. Terry
