I just spent the entire weekend replacing the head. I bought I Jabsco compact toilet (I know, I just read on archived posts that Jabscos are bad...too late). Anyway, i am using 1.5" hoses as the instructions say, with double clamps. I connected a new hose to the old hose with a spacer (there was no way I could reach the y-connection to take the old hose completely off. The instructions say not to use sealant, but the leaks occur at all the fitting points (at the discharge elbow, on the spacer., etc.) Can I use silicone sealant? Am I using hoses that are too big, even though I am following instructions. Help. I am very frustrated.I followed all instructions.

try move the clamps around and

getting them really tight. I had the same problem when I replaced my head this summer. Nothing worst than waste coming out of the bottom of the head. I did what I am telling you to do and the leak stopped. I had to move them up closer to the end of the hose. Sealant will not stop the leak. It might slow it down but it will not stop it.

Follow up

I am using a spacer to attach the old hose to a new hose. The old hoses (it's a 21-yr old Newport) have some type of gum or rubber compound around all hose connections all over the boat. All of those connections seem to work. Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried moving the clamps around today and they are all still leaking.

Just did all of my plumbing...

and when I made the last connection to the head, it leaked. Figured out it was the type of pipe I was using. It had the metal band that continuously goes around and the pipe just wouldn't lay flat against the jabsco output. I replaced that 1 piece of pipe from the head to the Y valve with 1.5 " rubber sanitation hose (really heavy duty stuff - around $4 a foot - only need 1 foot) and the leak stopped immediately.

Will a gasket work or rubber based caulk?

Is there any type of rubber gasket that will work? I have the new sanitation hose, double clamps. I am dumbfounded how to stop the leaks without some sort of gasket or rubber based caulk.

Hose is a misfit

Apparently you bought exhaust hose or something other than marine sanitation hose that isn't a tight enough fit on the fittings. Replace that foot of hose with sanitation hose--which you'll prob'ly have to warm a bit to get it onto the fittings...double clamp with screws on opposite sides of the hose.
